Metal detecting is more than finding coins, jewelry, and historic artifacts—it is also about respecting the land, its history, and the people around us. Following a few simple rules helps protect detecting locations and keeps the hobby enjoyable for everyone.

The Detectorist’s Code

  • Always obtain permission before detecting on private property.
  • Follow all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Respect posted signs, restricted areas, and property boundaries.
  • Fill every hole neatly and leave the ground as you found it.
  • Remove any trash you uncover and dispose of it properly.
  • Avoid damaging plants, crops, landscaping, or historic features.
  • Keep a respectful distance from other detectorists and the public.
  • Report valuable or historically significant finds when appropriate.
  • Never trespass or detect on protected archaeological sites.
  • Represent the metal-detecting community with courtesy and integrity.

Every responsible detectorist helps preserve access to parks, beaches, farms, and private properties. Remember the golden rule: leave every location better than you found it.

Happy hunting—and always detect responsibly!
