Choosing the right metal detector coil can improve depth, ground coverage, target separation, and sensitivity. The best coil size depends on where you detect and what you hope to find.

Large Metal Detector Coils

Large coils cover more ground and typically provide greater depth on medium-to-large targets. They work well on beaches, open fields, and other spacious areas with minimal metal trash.

Best for:

  • Covering large areas quickly
  • Locating deeper targets
  • Searching relatively clean ground

For example, the Minelab Manticore M11 is an 11-inch round, general-purpose coil that provides more coverage than the smaller M8. Similarly, the XP 11-inch FMF coil offers broad coverage and versatile performance for XP DEUS II users.

Small Metal Detector Coils

Small coils provide better maneuverability and target separation. They are ideal for trashy parks, rocky terrain, foundations, and tight spaces.

Best for:

  • Separating closely spaced targets
  • Detecting around metal trash
  • Finding small targets
  • Searching confined or uneven areas

The Minelab Manticore M8 is an 8-by-5.5-inch elliptical coil designed for small-target sensitivity, high-trash areas, and difficult terrain. The XP HF2 Elliptical coil also provides excellent separation and sensitivity to small or low-conductive targets.

Which Metal Detector Coil Should You Choose?

Choose the Manticore M11 or XP 11-inch FMF when depth and ground coverage are priorities. Choose the Manticore M8 or XP HF2 Elliptical when you need better target separation, maneuverability, and small-target sensitivity.

Many detectorists keep both large and small coils available so they can match their equipment to each hunting location.
