What's the big deal about Pinpointers?

For metal detecting, Pinpointers are the extra “something” that allows for more accurate location within a hole and less digging!

A pinpointer generally can detect metal at depths of up to about 6 inches.

Using this handheld metal detecting tool helps reduce the risk of damage to treasures by providing greater control over where to begin more delicate excavating work by hand.

Although it is certainly possible to metal detect without the use of a pinpointer, most seasoned detectorists will tell you that they simply wouldn’t.

Pinponters are light to carry, they can be placed in a holster or slid into a detecting finds bag for quick access. This is a tool that has a big impact on your hunt with a reasonable low cost factor.

Most pinpointers are either powered by a 9Volt battery or are rechargeable with a usb cord.

- A “good” general purpose, waterproof metal detector will normally cost $50-$130.

Most in this category offer sound and/or vibration modes and may include a flashlight.

- There are also upgraded pinpointers that have expanded capabilities and may work with wireless technology to connect to headphones with costs from $150 and up.

*Be sure to review the waterproof information, an IP68 rating will ensure that you are getting a pinpointer that can be submerged without damage. A “water-resistant” pinpointer does not meet this criteria.
